However,IsoonpickedupagainwhenIperceivedsittingatoneofthedesksaverybadly,untidilydressedgentlemanwho,thoughnotreallyold,wasalmostentirelygrey。Hewasoccupyingaseatquiteatthebackofthehallandalittleapartfromtherest,soIhastenedtositdownbesidehim,andthenfelltolookingatthecandidatesforexamination,andtoformingconclusionsaboutthem。Manydifferentfiguresandfacesweretheretobeseenthere;yet,inmyopinion,theyallseemedtodividethemselvesintothreeclasses。Firstofall,therewereyouthslikemyself,attendingforexaminationinthecompanyoftheirparentsortutors。AmongsuchIcouldseetheyoungestIwin(accompaniedbyFrost)andIlinkaGrap(accompaniedbyhisoldfather)。Allyouthsofthisclassworetheearlybeginningsofbeards,sportedprominentlinen,satquietlyintheirplaces,andneveropenedthebooksandnotebookswhichtheyhadbroughtwiththem,butgazedattheprofessorsandexaminationtableswithill-concealednervousness。Thesecondclassofcandidateswereyoungmeningymnasiumuniforms。Severalofthemhadattainedtothedignityofshaving,andmostofthemknewoneanother。Theytalkedloudly,calledtheprofessorsbytheirnamesandsurnames,occupiedthemselvesingettingtheirsubjectsready,exchangednotebooks,climbedoverdesks,fetchedthemselvespiesandsandwichesfromthevestibule,andatethemthenandtheremerelyloweringtheirheadstothelevelofadeskforpropriety’ssake。
