Emmamadenoanswer,andtriedtolookcheerfullyunconcerned,butwasreallyfeelinguncomfortableandwantinghimverymuchtobegone。

Shedidnotrepentwhatshehaddone;shestillthoughtherselfabetterjudgeofsuchapointoffemalerightandrefinementthanhecouldbe;butyetshehadasortofhabitualrespectforhisjudgmentingeneral,whichmadeherdislikehavingitsoloudlyagainsther;

Emmaremainedinastateofvexationtoo;buttherewasmoreindistinctnessinthecausesofher’s,thaninhis。Shedidnotalwaysfeelsoabsolutelysatisfiedwithherself,soentirelyconvincedthatheropinionswererightandheradversary’swrong,asMr。Knightley。

Hewalkedoffinmorecompleteself-approbationthanheleftforher。

Shewasnotsomateriallycastdown,however,butthatalittletimeandthereturnofHarrietwereveryadequaterestoratives。

Thepossibilityoftheyoungman’scomingtoMrs。Goddard’sthatmorning,andmeetingwithHarrietandpleadinghisowncause,gavealarmingideas。Thedreadofsuchafailureafterallbecametheprominentuneasiness;andwhenHarrietappeared,andinverygoodspirits,andwithouthavinganysuchreasontogiveforherlongabsence,shefeltasatisfactionwhichsettledherwithherownmind,andconvincedher,thatletMr。Knightleythinkorsaywhathewould,shehaddonenothingwhichwoman’sfriendshipandwoman’sfeelingswouldnotjustify。
