Now,therewasnothingintheircharactersasknowntoMr。Prout,theirhouse—master,atallcommandingrespect;nordidFoxy,thesubtlered—hairedschoolSergeant,trustthem。Hisbusinesswastoweartennis—shoes,carrybinoculars,andswoophawklikeuponevilboys。Hadhetakenthefieldalone,thathutwouldhavebeenraided,forFoxyknewthemannersofhisquarry;butProvidencemovedMr。

McTurkandBeetlehadtakenouttheirbooksandwerelyingontheirstomachs,chininhand。Theseasnoredandgurgled;thebirds,scatteredforthemomentbythesenewanimals,returnedtotheirbusinesses,andtheboysreadonintherich,warm,sleepysilence。

"Hullo,here’sakeeper,"saidStalky,shutting"HandleyCross"cautiously,andpeeringthroughthejungle。Amanwithagunappearedonthesky—linetotheeast。
