IncollectingthefollowingpoemsIhavetothanktheeditorsandproprietorsoftheperiodicalsinwhichcertainofthemhaveappearedforpermissiontoreclaimthem。

Nowthatthemiscellanyisbroughttogether,somelackofconcordinpieceswrittenatwidelysevereddates,andincontrastingmoodsandcircumstances,willbeobviousenough。ThisIcannothelp,butthesenseofdisconnection,particularlyinrespectofthoselyricspennedinthefirstperson,willbeimmaterialwhenitisborneinmindthattheyaretoberegarded,inthemain,asdramaticmonologuesbydifferentcharacters。

Asawholetheywill,Ihope,takethereaderforward,evenifnotfar,ratherthanbackward。Ishouldaddthatsomelinesintheearly-datedpoemshavebeenrewritten,thoughtheyhavebeenleftsubstantiallyunchanged。
