Bucklawkeptthestartwhichhehadgotten,andarrivedfirstatthespot,wherethestag,incapableofsustainingamoreprolongedflight,hadturneduponthehounds,and,inthehunter’sphrase,wasatbay。Withhisstatelyheadbentdown,hissideswhitewithfoam,hiseyesstrainedbetwixtrageandterror,thehuntedanimalhadnowinhisturnbecomeanobjectofintimidationtohispursuers。Thehunterscameuponebyone,andwatchedanopportunitytoassailhimwithsomeadvantage,which,insuchcircumstances,canonlybedonewithcaution。Thedogsstoodaloofandbayedloudly,intimatingatonceeagernessandfear,andeachofthesportsmenseemedtoexpectthathiscomradewouldtakeuponhimtheperiloustaskofassaultinganddisablingtheanimal。Theground,whichwasahollowinthecommonormoor,affordedlittleadvantageforapproachingthestagunobserved;andgeneralwastheshoutoftriumphwhenBucklaw,withthedexteritypropertoanaccomplishedcavalieroftheday,sprangfromhishorse,anddashingsuddenlyandswiftlyatthestag,broughthimtothegroundbyacutonthehindlegwithhisshorthunting-sword。Thepack,rushinginupontheirdisabledenemy,soonendedhispainfulstruggles,andsolemnisedhisfallwiththeirclamour;thehunters,withtheirhornsandvoices,whoopingandblowingamort,ordeath-note,whichresoundedfaroverthebillowsoftheadjacentocean。
